Soundboard limits are the tight ones. Five seconds at 128 kbps comes to roughly 80 KB, comfortably inside the 512 KB cap, so bitrate is rarely the constraint — length is.
Making a soundboard clip
- Check Format is set to MP3.
- Press Record, deliver the line, press Stop — keep it under five seconds.
- Play it back. If the timing is off, Discard and try again; short clips are all about timing.
- Download the MP3.
- In Discord: Server Settings, Soundboard, Upload Sound.
Short clips are unforgiving. Leave no dead air at the start — a clip that begins with half a second of silence feels broken when it fires. Record several attempts and keep the tightest one.
Recording for a bot
Most music and soundboard bots accept an MP3 by URL or upload. Since nothing here is hosted, you download the file and put it wherever the bot expects — a Discord CDN link from a message upload works for many of them, though those links can expire. A permanent host is more reliable for anything you want to keep working.
Why not just record in Discord
Discord's own voice message feature records and sends in one step, which is faster when you just want to send someone a message. It does not give you a file you can edit, reuse or re-record. For anything that will be used more than once — a soundboard clip, a bot intro, a stream sting — recording here and keeping the file is more useful.
A note on recording other people
Recording voice chat participants without telling them is against Discord's terms and, in many places, against the law. This page records your own microphone only, which sidesteps the question entirely. If you want to record a conversation, tell everyone in it first.

Why is my soundboard upload rejected?
Usually length rather than size — the five-second cap is strict. Re-record shorter, and trim any silence at the start.
Can I record other people in a voice channel?
Not from this page, which records your microphone only. Recording others without telling them breaches Discord's terms and may be illegal where you are.
How do I get a file to a Discord bot?
Most bots accept an MP3 by URL or direct upload. Upload the downloaded file to a message and use that link, or host it somewhere permanent if the bot needs it long-term — Discord CDN links can expire.
Is this better than Discord's built-in voice messages?
For anything reusable, yes, because you get a file you can keep and re-record. For sending someone a one-off message, Discord's own feature is quicker.
Can I add effects to my clip?
Not here — this records clean audio. Download the file and use Audacity for effects, then upload the processed version.
