Recording audio on iPhone

Record on an iPhone without installing anything. Open this page in Safari, press Record, and the file saves into Files where you can share it from anywhere.

00:00 Ready Level

Ready. Press Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks.

Safari is the only option, whatever browser you use

Apple requires every iOS browser to use its WebKit engine. Chrome, Firefox and Edge on an iPhone are interfaces over Safari, so their capabilities are Safari's. Historically, microphone access was restricted to Safari itself and third-party browsers could not record at all; that has improved in recent iOS versions, but Safari remains the reliable choice.

Two permission layers, same as macOS

  1. Safari asks for microphone permission the first time you press Record. Choose Allow.
  2. iOS must also permit Safari to use the microphone: Settings, Safari, Microphone — or Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone to check every app at once.

If Safari's prompt was granted but no signal arrives, the system-level setting is the place to look.

Two iPhone quirks that cause confusion

Where the file goes

Tapping Download saves to Files, On My iPhone, Downloads. From there you can share it to Mail, Messages, WhatsApp, Drive, Dropbox or anywhere else through the standard share sheet. iOS does not add downloaded audio to the Music app, so Files is where to look.

Questions

Do I need to install an app?

No. The recorder runs in Safari. Nothing is downloaded from the App Store and no account is created.

Where do my recordings save on iPhone?

Files, On My iPhone, Downloads. From there use the share sheet to send them anywhere. They do not appear in the Music app.

The recording is silent when I play it back.

Check the silent switch on the side of the phone. It mutes playback but not recording, so the file may be fine while playback is muted. Also raise the volume with the buttons while the audio is playing.

Can I record with the screen off?

No. Safari suspends the page when the screen locks or you leave the app. Keep the screen on for the whole recording, and consider setting Auto-Lock to Never for long takes.

Does this work in Chrome on iPhone?

Chrome on iOS uses Safari's engine, so behaviour is broadly the same. Safari remains the most reliable choice for microphone access on iOS.

Can I use AirPods to record?

Yes. Connect them first, then select them from the Input dropdown. AirPods record in a lower-quality mode when used as a microphone, which is a Bluetooth limitation — wired earbuds sound noticeably better.
