The honest trade-off
A file recorded here and attached to a chat arrives as an audio attachment, not as a native voice note with the waveform bubble and playback speed control. That presentation is exclusive to recordings made inside WhatsApp, and no external file can produce it.
What you get instead is the ability to listen before you send. WhatsApp's recorder commits on release — there is no review step. If you are recording something that matters, being able to hear it back and re-record is worth losing the waveform bubble for.
Sending from a computer
- Record here and download the MP3.
- Open WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.
- Click the attachment icon, then Document.
- Choose the MP3. It sends as a playable audio attachment.
Attaching as Document rather than Photos & Videos is the reliable route — some versions of the media picker filter audio files out entirely.
Sending from a phone
Download the file first — it goes to Downloads on Android, or Files on iOS. Then in WhatsApp, tap attach, choose Document, and navigate to it. On iOS you can also use the share sheet directly from the Files app, which is usually quicker.

MP3 is the right choice here without exception. The same recordings in WAV would be six times larger, and WhatsApp compresses aggressively regardless.
A word on what you send
Voice notes feel ephemeral and are not. A recipient can save, forward and share the file indefinitely, and voice carries tone in a way that text does not. Nothing here is uploaded to us, but once you send it, it is theirs. That is worth a second's thought before pressing send on anything difficult.

Yes. Any file sent through WhatsApp can be saved and forwarded by whoever receives it. That is true of native voice notes too.
