Why this suits a Chromebook particularly well
On a Chromebook there is no meaningful desktop application layer to fall back on. Audacity requires enabling Linux support, and Android apps from the Play Store often behave oddly with ChromeOS audio routing. A page that records in the browser sidesteps all of it, and it works identically on the cheapest Chromebook and the most expensive one. The wider case for recording without installing anything applies to any locked-down machine.
Storage is the other consideration. Most Chromebooks ship with 32 or 64 GB, much of it already used. Recording MP3 rather than WAV keeps files to roughly a sixth of the size, which matters when local space is tight.
Managed and school Chromebooks
If your Chromebook was issued by a school or employer, an administrator can restrict what the browser may do. Recording may be blocked by policy, and no setting on your side will change that.

- URL block lists may prevent the page loading at all.
- If a policy is the cause, it needs an IT request — there is no workaround, and attempting one is generally against acceptable use policy.
Where files save
Downloads go to the Downloads folder in the ChromeOS Files app, which is local storage rather than Drive. If you want a recording backed up, move it to Google Drive from the Files app afterwards — local Chromebook storage is wiped when a device is powerwashed, which managed devices do routinely.
Microphone notes
Built-in Chromebook microphones vary enormously in quality across models and are generally the weakest component. A basic USB microphone or a wired headset is a substantial upgrade and works without drivers. Select it from the Input dropdown after plugging it in — ChromeOS does not always switch the default automatically.

Do I need to install anything on a Chromebook?
No, and that is the point. There is no extension, no Linux container and no Android app involved — it runs in the browser you already have open.
Recording is blocked on my school Chromebook.
Your administrator has likely disabled microphone access by policy. Check chrome://policy to confirm. Only IT can change it, and you should ask rather than try to route around it.
Where do recordings save?
The Downloads folder in the Files app. That is local storage, so move anything important to Google Drive if the device might be powerwashed.
Should I record in MP3 or WAV on a Chromebook?
MP3, unless you specifically need uncompressed audio. Chromebook storage is limited and MP3 files are about a sixth the size.
Can I use a USB microphone?
Yes, and it is a significant upgrade over most built-in Chromebook microphones. ChromeOS handles USB audio without drivers — plug it in and pick it from the Input dropdown.
Does it work offline?
