When the browser is genuinely the better option
- You cannot install software. School, work and library machines frequently prohibit it, and no amount of Audacity's capability helps if it will not install.
- You are on a Chromebook or a phone. Audacity does not meaningfully run on either.
- You need one recording, now. Installing an editor to capture two minutes of speech is disproportionate.
- Someone non-technical needs to record for you. Sending a link works; asking a guest to install and configure an audio editor often does not.
- You are on an unfamiliar machine and do not want to leave software on it.
When to stop and use Audacity
- You need to edit — cut sections, fade, adjust timing.
- You need more than one track.
- You need noise reduction, EQ or compression.
- You are recording something long enough that browser memory becomes a real constraint.
- You need a format or bit depth this page does not produce.
