Best microphone settings for voice

The best microphone settings come down to three things: how far away you are, how loud the signal is, and which direction you speak into. Equipment matters far less than any of them.

Closer is generally better — more voice, less room. The limit is plosives and proximity effect, the bass boost that occurs very close to directional microphones. Angling slightly off-axis handles both.

Gain

Set it once, at the start, and do not touch it. Use the volume meter: speak at your normal recording volume and adjust until the meter sits in the blue with amber on your loudest words.

Set gain on the hardware where possible. A USB microphone's physical knob or an interface's preamp is a better-quality gain stage than any software slider, and produces less noise for the same level.

Angle and direction

Most microphones are directional and have a specific address. Side-address microphones — most large studio condensers — are spoken into from the side, usually where the logo is, not the top. Speaking into the top of a side-address microphone gives a thin, distant sound, and it is one of the most common mistakes.

End-address microphones, including most USB podcast microphones and handheld dynamics, are spoken into from the top. If unsure, record a short test into each face and compare — the difference is obvious.

Angling the microphone 15 to 30 degrees off your mouth's centre line lets plosive air pass beside the capsule while barely affecting tone.

Software EQ, compression and enhancement at the recording stage. All of them are decisions baked permanently into the file, and all are better applied afterwards where they can be undone. Record clean, process later.

How far should I sit from my microphone?

About 15–20 cm for speech with a USB or condenser microphone, closer with a dynamic. Angle it slightly off your mouth's centre line so plosives pass beside the capsule.

What level should I record at?

Mostly blue on the meter with amber peaks on the loudest words. Never sustained at the top — clipping cannot be repaired.

Should I use Microphone Boost on Windows?

No. It amplifies your noise floor along with your voice. Set it to 0 dB, use the normal level slider, and get closer to the microphone instead.

Which side of my microphone should I speak into?

Depends on the type. Large studio condensers are side-address — speak into the face with the logo. Most USB podcast microphones are end-address, spoken into from the top. Test both and the difference is unmistakable.

Should noise suppression be on or off?

On for speech, off for singing and sound recording. It is tuned to remove anything that is not a voice, which is helpful for calls and destructive for music.

Do I need an expensive microphone?

No. A modest USB microphone, positioned well in a soft room, beats an expensive one placed badly in a reverberant one. Spend on the room first.
