Recording audio in Edge

Edge runs on Chromium, so its recording capabilities match Chrome's exactly. The differences are all in the interface — and, on a work machine, in what your IT policy allows.

00:00 Ready Level

Ready. Press Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks.

Same engine, different chrome

Since Edge moved to Chromium in 2020 it has shared Chrome's media stack. That means identical format support, identical permission semantics and identical tab audio capture. Anything that works in Chrome works here, and the Chrome page describes the same underlying behaviour.

What differs is where the controls live. Edge's site permissions sit behind the padlock icon under Permissions for this site. The browser-wide list is at edge://settings/content/microphone.

Managed devices are the real difference

Edge is the default browser on most corporate Windows deployments, and organisations frequently apply policy to it. If recording fails on a work machine and the same page works on your phone, policy is the likely cause.

If a policy is blocking you, no setting change on your side will help. It is an IT request.

Windows adds its own microphone gate

Beyond the browser, Windows has a system-level privacy control. Open Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone and confirm that both Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone are switched on. If either is off, Edge cannot open a microphone regardless of what you allow in the browser. The Windows page covers this in more detail.

Questions

Is Edge as capable as Chrome for recording?

Yes — identical, because both use Chromium's media stack. Format support, permission behaviour and tab capture are the same.

Recording is blocked on my work laptop. Why?

Most likely an IT policy. Open edge://policy to see what has been applied. If AudioCaptureAllowed is disabled or the site is on a block list, only your administrator can change it.

Where are Edge's microphone settings?

Click the padlock in the address bar for this site, or open edge://settings/content/microphone for the full list of sites.

Do I need a Microsoft account?

No. This page has no account of any kind and does not interact with your browser profile.

Can Edge record audio from another tab?

Yes, using the same screen-sharing mechanism as Chrome. Remember to tick Share tab audio in the picker.

Does this work in Edge's Internet Explorer mode?

No. IE mode uses the legacy Trident engine, which has none of these APIs. Use normal Edge mode.
